I’m Mark Baratto, the artist behind Backyards of Key West. I turn my photographs of the island’s cottages, beaches, and familiar landmarks into colorful digital paintings.

How I make the art

Every piece begins with a photograph I take. Using a stylus and a custom brush in Photoshop, I paint over the image by hand, building the color, texture, and detail. I then remove the original photo layer, leaving the digital painting you see in the finished artwork.

I started Backyards of Key West by sharing photographs of local homes. The Backyards of Key West Podcast grew from that same curiosity about the people and places that make this island special. The photographs became paintings, and the artwork became the gallery you can visit today.
